Our Story
The Pybus family have farmed around Kirkby Fleetham since at least the 16th century. The land around Crabtree Hall is still farmed by the family and the business centre is another exciting chapter in the family run business. The offices are renovated 18th century farm buildings. Crabtree Hall and the original farm buildings were designed by the renowned local architect John Carr to function as a model farm in the Georgian period. John Carr was famously employed by the North Riding to build bridges. Croft, Morton-on Swale and Skipton-on-Swale, were all bridges designed by him. The Palladian architecture is distinctive of the period and Carr’s own style.
Georgian Architecture
John Carr was tasked, by the Earl of Holderness, with rebuilding the farm steadings on the Hornby estate. Arbour hill near Patrick Brompton is a copy of Crabtree Hall, but built in stone rater than brick. Home Farm near Hornby completes the trio of architecturally significant steadings built by John Carr. The original buildings were designed to provide an enclosed farm yard, with the house forming one wall and the unique pepper pots at two of the corners facing the Great North Road. Over the years more buildings were added. The renovation included the rebuilding of a tin roofed sheep handling system, which became the Sheep Pens office. Holderness House sits on the footprint of a more modern potato store that was erected in 1983.
